SMIT Salvage and Klyne Tugs complete ‘Jambo’ bunker removal operation
Rotterdam 15 July, 2003
SMIT Salvage and Klyne Tugs have successfully removed and recovered 85 tonnes of bunker oil aboard the Jambo which sank off the coast of Scotland. The bunkers were pumped into a holding tank of the ‘Anglian Prince’. The operation was carried out utilising the HOT TAP technology which allows for the recovery of liquid substances from sunken vessels in a pollution free manner.
After this success, the next step is to remove the cargo from the vessel. Salvors have mobilised the salvage tugs ‘Lady Laura’, ‘Boxer’ and the crane barge ‘Anna 4’. The Anna 4 will be used as a work, accommodation and diving platform. The recovered cargo will be pumped into five hopper split barges. Hopper split barges are specially designed to carry highly fluid cargo. This type of barge is commonly used in the dredging industry. Due to the nature of the cargo, divers will use the ‘Dirty Harry System’, a special ‘closed diving system’ where the diver does not get into contact with the water at all.
The Jambo ran into difficulties Sunday the 29th of June near the Summer Isles, Scotland. The AHTS Anglian Prince of Klyne Tugs was mobilised and sent to the casualty. However, when the vessel arrived on the scene the Jambo had slid off the rocks and sunk.
