The ‘Giant 4’ and the ‘Asian Hercules II’ safely delivered the first two sections of the TRICOLOR  at the specially prepared scrap yard in Zeebrugge (Belgium). The convoy ensured an unusual sight since the size and condition of the section required the ‘Asian Hercules II’ to remain connected during the voyage to Zeebrugge.

During the transport there were no setbacks and the salvage crews proceded with due care for safety and the environment. The locks at the entrance of the harbour in Zeebrugge were barely large enough to allow the convoy to pass. The next step of the operation is already on the way; the ‘Vagant’ is in position and the ‘Buzzard’ is being positioned at the time of writing. Together they will commence the cutting operation of the next sections.

An unusual convoy with two sections of the TRICOLOR.

For now the ‘Giant 4’ will remain in the harbour of Zeebrugge where teams will prepare the disposal of the two sections of the TRICOLOR. Removing the enormous pieces of wreckage from the barge will take some time. After the next sections have been cut the ‘Smit Barge 2’ will be utilised for the transport.

The salvage of the TRICOLOR is being carried out by the ‘Combinatie Berging Tricolor’, a consortium consisting of: SMIT Salvage B.V., Scaldis Salvage & Marine Contractors N.V., URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting N.V., and Multraship Salvage B.V. The salvage contract was awarded to the consortium by Wilh. Wilhelmsen and Gard Services.
