During the weekend, some oil spillage occurred during the fifth cutting operation of the TRICOLOR. The leakage has now stopped. When the oil spillage first occurred last Sunday, the oil pollution vessel ‘Union Beaver’ immediately commenced with cleaning up at the salvage site. Dutch coastguard vessels ‘Arca’, ‘Frans Naerenbout’ and ‘Rotterdam’  participated in the second tier of the cleanup.

The Belgian vessels ‘Valcke’ and ‘Ter Streep’ were also deployed to help remove the oil from the sea. In the meantime, the salvage team has completed the fifth cut of the TRICOLOR and is now preparing for the third lifting operation. The fifth cut was completed yesterday evening (8-9) at 22.30 after 60 hours of actual cutting time. Now that the fifth cut has been completed, the salvage team has three sections of the TRICOLOR waiting to be lifted from the seabed. The section to be lifted today is the bow of the car carrier.

This lift will be a solo performance of the floating cranes ‘Rambiz’. The ‘Rambiz’ lifted the first two sections of the TRICOLOR in tandem with floating cranes ‘Asian Hercules II’. These first two lifts were considered to be the most difficult. Now that the first two sections have safely been delivered at the scrap site in Zeebrugge (Belgium), the presence of the ‘Asian Hercules II’ is no longer required. She was put on a transport to Singapore last week.

The salvage of the TRICOLOR is being carried out by the ‘Combinatie Berging Tricolor’, a consortium consisting of: SMIT Salvage B.V., Scaldis Salvage & Marine Contractors N.V., URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting N.V., and Multraship Salvage B.V. The salvage contract was awarded to the consortium by Wilh. Wilhelmsen and Gard Services.
